As a Sydney pro makeup artist, I’ve worked with hundreds of women - from brides to beginners, and I often see the same makeup mistakes pop up again and again. Whether you’re doing your everyday glam or prepping for a big event, these quick fixes can totally elevate your look. Let’s break down 5 of the most common makeup mistakes and what to do instead.

1. Using the Wrong Foundation Shade

The mistake: Wearing a foundation that’s too light, too dark, or the wrong undertone.

The fix: Test foundation in natural light along your jawline (not your hand!). If you’re unsure of your undertone, look at your veins - green usually means warm, blue means cool, and a mix is neutral. A good match should disappear into your skin.

2. Over-Powdering

The mistake: Applying too much powder, leaving your skin looking dry or cakey.

The fix: Lightly powder only where needed, typically the T-zone. Use a fluffy brush or puff and press gently instead of sweeping. Try hydrating setting sprays to bring back a natural finish.

3. Skipping Skin Prep

The mistake: Applying makeup directly onto dry or unprepped skin.

The fix: A hydrated base = smoother application. Cleanse, moisturise, and use a primer that suits your skin type. I always say, “Your makeup is only as good as your prep.”

4. Neglecting Brows

The mistake: Forgetting to define or shape your brows.

The fix: Your brows frame your face! Use a pencil or powder to lightly fill gaps, then set with a clear or tinted brow gel. Aim for natural, not overly blocked or sharp.

5. Not Blending Properly

The mistake: Harsh contour lines, unblended eyeshadow, or mismatched foundation.

The fix: Take your time with blending, it’s everything. Use clean brushes or a beauty sponge to diffuse harsh lines and blend between shades. Good lighting helps too!

Final Thoughts:

Makeup should enhance your features, not hide them. It’s all about understanding your face and choosing techniques that work for you, not just following trends. If you’ve made some of these mistakes before, don’t worry, we all have! That’s how we learn and grow.
